Q. How could there be light on the first day of Creation if the sun was not created until the fourth day?
A. This question is often asked. Gen 3:1-5 says, And God said, Let there be light: and there was light. And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness. And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.
A few verses later, 14-19, He says. Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years: And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so. And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also. And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth, and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good. And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.
This is only a problem if we don’t see an Infinite and Omnipotent God. He does not need the sun, moon, and stars to provide light. He is light! 1 Jn 1:5says, God is light, and in Him is no darkness at all. God Himself was the light for the first three days of Creation, just as He will be in the New Heavens and New Earth, as Rev22:5 says There shall be no night there; and they need no candle, neither light of the sun; for the Lord God giveth them light: and they shall reign forever and ever.
Until He created the sun, moon, and stars, God provided light during the Day and could have done so during the Night as well per Gen 1:14.
But here’s something far more important to think about. Day and Night are important, and God has given them to us. However, many walk in the darkness of the soul and spirit which is the precursor to Eternal Death. Praise God, Jesus said in Jn 8:12, ‘I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.’ Put your faith in Him and begin to enjoy His Light of Life … forever! Sadly, those who do not believe in Him will exist in ‘outer darkness’ forever! Matt 8:12.
