Brethren’s Retreat June 2016

The following notes are brief bullets not intended to be a comprehensive record of the Retreat. However there are sufficient notes to give an overview enabling the reader to receive an idea of the direction of God’s Spirit for the time together. As you read and consider these notes allow the Spirit of God to impress upon your heart what God has a personal direction for yourself.

We believe God called the Brethren of our Fellowship together to speak specifically in the context of our needs. Indeed a refreshing in our unity and direction was established; the blessing and joy generated over this time continues to grow to the glory of our Lord.

Peter Hawyes

Friday Night
  • Prophecy: God brought Israel to the Red Sea; and He got them over!
  • Prophecy: Not knee-deep; get into the middle of the stream – beyond your control and into His control.
  • Prophecy: If you get into deep water and begin to drown, God will provide the oxygen and get you breathing with supernatural; life.
  • God has done great things. Is doing great things here and now.
  • You’re bought with a price; you are His prized possession placed into, set in the Body of Christ,
  • He brought you into the abundance and Glory of Heaven; into Him, for His purposes. Lay your life down to live His. Break the earthen vessel.
  • You have purpose in Him; His purpose. Let Him purge everything not of Him in your body, spirit, mind and emotions.
  • Prayer: Send the wind that will blow down the trees, structures, that were planted and constructed to our own glory. Then blow upon the impossible sea before us to open the way for us into your purposes.
  • The kaleidoscope of many men opening their different hearts to God’s glory.
  • Interpretation: Stay in the ship and you will be saved. Noah built the ark and got into it with his family. You are building the Church; get into it with your family. And stay in it!
Chris Scott
  • Blow the issues in this world. Our God has overcome the world.
  • Don’t lament the problems; let the waters of life flow. Preach the Ministries, but also baptism in the Holy Ghost.
  • Ephesus was in order; but had left their first love. Order can replace love for Jesus. First love is not how you felt at salvation, but the love with which God loved me to change me.
  • Ministry without the Holy Ghost is deadly. Ministry does not establish who you are; don’t build your personal Babel. Ministry establishes only the Lord Jesus. Jn 7
  • Gifts of the Spirit must operate in conjunction with Ministry Gifts and vice versa.
  • It’s His Church; Him in you; His gifts and abilities in you. Love Jesus more than these!
  • Ministry is more than an opportunity to preach
  • It’s having Jesus’ skill in you – to reveal Him and give Him to people.
  • Solution to every problem: drink Living Water.
  • Ministry Gifts provide Living Water Christ Himself!
  • Christ is a well of Living Water springing up
  • The ark was precious, safe, designed by God but without water it could do nothing and go nowhere.
  • Out of your heart must flow rivers of Living Water.
  • Principle: Wait, get filled with the Holy Ghost, then minister, Wait; get your power from on high!
  • Matt 16 – Peter changed from Bar Jona. Lose who you are. Flesh and blood gave you nothing; the Lord gave you revelation,
  • Upon your little rock Jesus builds His Church – Who Jesus is.
  • Hell’s gates – worldly circumstances – will not prevail.
  • Jesus gives keys of the Kingdom. Ministries are keys to the Kingdom.
  • Don’t worry about ministries; sort out the vessel.
  • Stir up your gifting toward yourself, home and business. If your ministry does not direct you, how will it guide anyone else?
  • Let the Water of Life flow to your wife, children, before flowing out.
  • You haven’t got it all. Ministries operate in cooperation with each other.
  • If you are godly, you will not be jealous of another brother’s ‘success’.
  • Does your ‘key’ fit a given situation? Perhaps another brother’s gift will fit better?
  • We have keys to the Kingdom; Jesus has the keys to Death and Hell.
  • We cannot save souls, affect people, change lives; only the Spirit can.
  • Parts of the Body have different functions; all are needed. No Main Men What Count.
  • Be a channel through which God works to save, heal and glorify.
  • Elders, discern, counsel, assess by the Gifts of the Spirit.
  • If you have no love, you’re a Pharisee.
  • Woman at Jesus feet wept because she drank Water of Life.
  • Preach with compassion, discerning, love – but with Holy Ghost power.
  • If you haven’t got things right at home, you haven’t proved your ministry.
  • Flow Living Water in your home. Prove at home first, then in the Assembly.
  • Conquer feels of inferiority – don’t keep asking whether your messages and prayers are OK!
  • Don’t wait for approval, or seek it; except from Jesus.
  • Don’t seek recognition – except from Jesus.
  • Submit to Elders and one to another; see the Body come together!
  • If you love the world, the Father’s love will not be in your heart and your ministry will be ineffective. Die to yourself that Jesus may live in you – for others.
  • Interpretation: Cut off the hands and feet not given to Jesus. And the eyes that don’t see Him and His ways.
  • Live, walk, touch, see only Jesus and His Will.
Peter Hawyes
  • Elders must see to the implementation in the Assemblies of what we hear here.. Time is too short; don’t permit distractions. This is our Vision!
  • Don’t reduce God’s revelations to sets of doctrines that enable us to live as a good set of good CAOG Christians.
  • Enter into all God promised in Old Testament Types and Shadows and which He delivered in Jesus Christ. Embrace the spirit of the New Testament Church. We have to display the life and reality of Jesus,
  • What we have received has God’s authority to deal with and expel every sin, sickness, attitude and practice that keeps people bound.
  • You know who you are naturally. But God sees you as one who is endowed with Gospel Life, living in it and dispensing it everywhere.
  • Guilt and contamination are the influence of evil on the natural being. But the measure of the Life of Christ resides in the centre of that being. Minister Christ into your issues – lest you miss the purpose of the Gospel.
  • The Gospel is more than blessings and provisions; it is the Power of God to release in us victory for every situation in our lives. It’s more than Divine intervention for my needs – that may be carnal – it’s Divine Intervention for all of me. The awful price of the Gospel was paid for the fullness of God in and through you to become vessels sanctified and meet for the Master’s use. The influence of the Holy Spirit? No! His invasion, infilling and empowering – essentials for God’s purposes.
  • Jesus gives life; the Holy Spirit gives expression to that life so that the will of the Father may be accomplished in you and through you. The Price was paid s that the Life and power and will of the Father, Son and Spirit may be manifest in us and directed to the world.
  • Keeping ourselves alive in the flesh, our ways, hinders the expression of the Godhead and His desires.
  • Jonah ‘died’ but God’s whale delivered him to the right beach.
  • Become desperate to be involved in the plans and purposes of God. Don’t stop waiting on God till you are filled.
  • Young men receive the counsel of godly old men. But we pray for young men to arise in the power and purpose of God. Don’t gripe about frustrations; draw upon God and His infilling.
  • If you function according to anything but the power, plan and purpose of God, you operate according to animal instincts; you become a monkey instead of being a key in God’s purposes.
  • Rise above sin and circumstances. The Pearl of Great Price i.e. revealing Jesus. Sell all and purchase that pearl. But we are too busy, too committed, to fit into God’s purposes. In ‘go forth in multiply’ is contained the plan to bring forth sons to God.
  • But our passion for our lusts has ousted our passion for God’s commission.
  • Computers, i-Pads, technology are dampening our spiritual desire. They have captured us to the point of spiritual blindness.
  • God’s way must be first; only the Son defines God-given drives in us.
  • Stop trying to be something; the natural man contributes nothing to the man of the Spirit. Be the new man in Christ. Covet and crave the spiritual gifts that give you the spiritual life to bring forth sons to God.
  • Make your decision to put all upon the altar. For this decision, the Holy Spirit, Jesus and the Father – the fullness of God – must be paramount in me.
  • Rise above who you are as a natural man. The measure of Christ is never measured by the measure of the natural man. See little, cowering, hiding, Gideon whom the angel called a Mighty Man of Valour.
  • But he had to obey the call and pay the price.
  • Deal with your fears, like Gideon, and the indiscreet. The 300 out of 32000 were enough for God.
  • Blessing comes not from receiving God’s Gifts but in using them.
Mike Muller
  • We are called to one Body; we are called to the will of God.
  • God’s work is to empty you of you so that He may fill you.
  • 1 Chron 28:2ff God called Solomon to build His house.
  • We are called to build the House of God. This is God’s priority; is it yours?
  • Build according to the plan – like David instructed Solomon.
  • God is the ultimate Plan Drawer – in writing; Do it!
  • 1 Kings 3:1 – Solomon links with Pharaoh – and brings his daughter in.
  • A fatal mistake thinking we can serve God and our own interests.
  • V2 Because God’s House was not built the people resorted to worshipping on the High Places
  • V3 Solomon loved the Lord but he sacrificed on the high places!
  • You can’t serve God in the Assembly and look for stimulation and satisfaction elsewhere.
  • In Acts they held all things in common. They were daily in the Temple. This was their life; it was total commitment.
  • Acts 4:32 – One heart, one soul, all things common = great power in witness and great grace.
Wayne Michell
  • Gen 1; Many places were without form and void.
  • When God moves, creation began – and begins.
  • That same Word has been invested in us.
  • God’s Word is beyond us. It is the only thing that changes and rescues men’s lives.
  • If it is stopped, it becomes I who do it; It operates best when we mix it with faith.
  • Rom5:1ff. God is dealing with us; don’t be ashamed of the trial of your faith.
  • The corn of wheat must die so that multiplied fruit may come.
  • By the Spirit, God gives us hope in the victory we walk in.
  • The world cries out for redemption but they don’t know, cannot know, until He moves in them
  • To see this, we have to die so that fruit may come.
  • Don’t preach or bemoan darkness and problems; declare Jesus as the Light, the Life
Gareth Hosking
  • 1 Cor 6:14 God raises us up; we are the Body of Christ.
  • We have no purpose of our own, except evil; so God saves us for His purpose.
  • 1 Jn 2:15 – Love not the world. Yet the BBC propagates, ‘Love the world!’
  • Acts 26:14 – For this purpose … to make you a minister.
  • Acts 17:21 – No new revelation, no new message. Only Rise, Stand, Witness, GO!
  • You don’t have top be like the world to witness to the world; just be like Jesus.
  • The lust of the flesh, lust of the eyes, the pride of life; these represent the systems of the world.
  • There’s only one viable plan; God’s Plan. Only one wise way; God’s way.
  • Eph 4:1 – You cannot agree to disagree; be of ONE mind; the mind of Christ.
  • God’s people cannot have private lives; we are sent to the world.
Francois Visser, Durbanville
  • Zech 4:6 Not by might; not by power; ONLY by My Spirit.
  • 1 Sam 10 – Be little in your own eyes.
  • Have we been chasing asses too long?
  • Saul meets Samuel who has a huge announcement for him;
  • Saul’s inferiority questions the message.
  • But God has chosen him.
  • 10:1ff. God has anointed us to be captains over His inheritance.
  • We are stewards over God’s Flock and Gifts and Graces.
  • We take our example as Shepherds from Jesus, the Good Shepherd
  • Let the sheep hear your voice; give them clean water and good pasture; emulate the Good Shepherd; they will hear your voice, they will know your voice; they will follow.
  • Our relationship with God must be reflected in our Marriage and Family.
  • 2 Tim 1; you are saved and called with a holy calling.
  • God doesn’t need your personal stature; He needs you to respond to His calling.
  • His grace attends His calling; and provide the power, wisdom and anointing you need.
  • It’s a holy calling; you are to be, destined to be, a vessel unto honour, fit for the Master’s use.
  • God’s Gifts are laid upon us by the hands of Jesus through the ministry of brethren.
  • Y7ou have the spirit of power, love and a sound mind; there go our fears, doubts and inferiorities!
  • God conquers not by your ability, but by His Spirit in you.
  • 1 Sam 10; get over looking for asses; get on with the Call of God.
  • Saul’s Call was confirmed by Samuel’s prophecy concerning who he would meet. “Yo will be turned into another man!”
  • Let God change your vision and priorities – to HIS – for you, for US.
  • He confirms and strengthens us in every meeting – through simple, called brethren.
  • So ask what change or action you will engage in after every meeting.
  • Saul was OT; but there is more power in the New Testament.
  • ‘God is with thee.’ His ‘occasions’ will pop up.
  • Sow into your family – wife and children – what you have heard.
  • We get Gifts and Calling at Salvation but launch from the Foundation laid.
  • V8, Wait for me 7 days. Tarry. Wait for God; His prophet; His timing.
  • God gave him another heart; all the signs came to pass.
  • Saul turned to do what God commanded – and he got another heart.
  • Don’t brag or seek praise; wait till Heaven for your reward.
  • But Saul stopped doing what he started with; go nowhere unless God sends you and goes with you.
  • Num 11; Israel craves Egypt’s leeks and garlic.
  • V16; Gather 70 me to stand with you; God will anoint them.
  • V25; God did it; they prophesied and did not cease. Would that all God’s people would prophesy!
Chris Scott
  • God has given us young men aplenty.
  • You will have to stand and fight as do our current fathers.
  • You need the Person and Power of the Holy Ghost and His Gifts.
  • But we have to come to grips with the Ministry of our Great High Priest, Jesus.
  • Heb 4; Faithful and merciful with a tender heart of intercession.
  • God doesn’t take our weakness away; His strength is manifest in our weakness so that He gets the glory.
  • Pride is found in the heart of every man. David numbered Israel, got proud of ‘what he had’ and displeased God. We can never find satisfaction in our numbers and what we do or have!
  • But God humbles us through the weakness of the flesh.
  • The power of the Holy Ghost relates directly to Resurrection power.
  • Jesus Ministry did not end at the Cross; His High Priesthood is eminently current. He sent, and sends, Gifts through His High Priestly Ministry.
  • The end of ‘our ministry’ transpires on the Cross as we die to self.
  • Jesus builds His Church on the Foundation of His sufferings. We cannot be effective without compassion, feeling people’s infirmities. We cannot develop compassion without suffering. It is then that resurrection surges in us.
  • Heb 4:13ff; Hold fast. The powers of darkness are strongly against the ministries.
  • There is no resignation from the Body of Christ – or your ministry! Look after the few, the wayward one. It’s your calling. Hold fast. Stand strong and bear the reproach of Jesus. He said, ‘If it is possible …’ And it wasn’t. You have a cup; your ministry! Walk in Jesus’ footsteps and down the difficulties, betrayals, rejections … note the plurals.
  • Minimise involvement in personal conflicts – but face them at the Throne of Grace.
  • Jesus still identifies with the weakness of His Children. We’re not ‘ministry machines’; draw on His love and compassion.
  • Our people are going through terrible stresses these days. But Jesus is our Intercessor, and we share with Him as Supplicators.
  • Keep ministering; don’t ever stop. But minister with love for, if you don’t love people, they will go to Hell!
  • Jesus is obedient to His High Priestly Ministry. Learn His obedience.
  • 2 Cor 4:1. The life of the ministry. Elders, don’t hold onto men in your Assemblies; make them available to the apostles. We have received ministry … obtained mercy … we faint not. The Gospel is being hidden by many of God’s men; open the hidden Gospel.
  • V5; we preach Christ; we are your servants; but we all have treasure in earthen vessels that need to be broken.
  • You actually don’t have a ministry. See it this way. Christ has you and it is His ministry, whatever of the 5 you are, that is operating in and through you. Remember, you calling and gifting was determined before the foundation of the earth. Before God started Creation, he had designed your participation and application of Jesus’ ministry in and through you. Christ in you the Hope of Glory!
  • You’re not everything; just a measure. You’re not, e.g., a man with a teaching ministry; you’re a teacher. That’s what you are; it’s not a tag on; it’s who you are!
  • You’ll face trials attracted by the ministry – see 2 Cor 4 – but you will survive the onslaught by the grace God bestows on you. You bear in your body the dying of Jesus so that Jesus’ life can be manifest in your body!
  • As death works your dying, so life works in the Assemble and the people you love into Heaven.
  • 6:1ff esp v5. We are labourers, workers, together with Christ – and each other! Your ministry is proved and approved in and through the harshness of patience, afflictions, necessities, distresses, stripes, prisons. IN ALL THESE THINGS WE ARE APPROVED – BY GOD!

The weekend ended with the Annual General meeting.
